Consumer education drive empowers Dido Valley beneficiaries

The City held a housing consumer education session for the first-time homeowners of the Dido Valley housing project in Simon’s Town. These sessions assist beneficiaries with the correct
information at housing projects, the roles and responsibilities of being a new
homeowner, about budgeting and personal finance, home maintenance
responsibilities and about drafting a will.
The City's Dido Valley housing project is a flagship affordable housing project in Simon's Town. The R170 million housing project will benefit 600 beneficiaries and their families.
'The City's Human Settlements Directorate's consumer sessions aim to assist and educate new beneficiaries about the roles and responsibilities of being a home owner and we were pleased to help so many beneficiaries and their families.
'A home is an incredibly important asset and it is vital for beneficiaries to be empowered with all of the necessary information before moving into their homes. Becoming a homeowner has a number of benefits, including providing beneficiaries with stability and peace of mind and it is an investment that will grow in value for generations to come.
'This is a flagship restitution project and I am pleased that as a City, we are making excellent progress with providing housing opportunities to the most vulnerable residents across the metro, which are close to transport hubs and economic opportunities. Our drive for redress and empowerment remains key commitments that we are unlocking on a daily basis whether it be through our housing delivery programme or creating meaningful economic growth,' said the Acting Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Alderman James Vos.
About Dido Valley
This mega project contains a restitution component, which will enable the descendants and even some of the original Luyolo community members to return to Simon's Town, from where they were forcefully removed in the 1960s.
The Luyolo land claimant beneficiaries were forcibly removed from Simon's Town in the mid-1960s under the apartheid Group Areas Act. These beneficiaries were moved to Gugulethu. The project has a combined Project Engagement Committee and individual Support Organisations representing the two groups of beneficiaries from Redhill and Luyolo respectively.
The majority of the beneficiaries for the Breaking New Ground component of the project come from the Redhill informal settlement, which is located between Simon's Town and Scarborough and their allocation is in line with housing allocation policies.
